balancing aesthetic with function

I am a designer with a heart filled with art. I thoroughly believe that in these modern times, everyone interacts with design and interfaces in their own ways, and we must find a way to communicate beautifully to progress together as a team. With my background in Print Management at Ryerson's Graphic Communications Management program, and 7+ industry years working directly with clients to solve their needs, I am happy to apply my knowledge and be the communication bridge from designer to client. I am a listener and maker, and I love to use my passion for visual art to enhance my ability to create effective works for my clients. In my mind's eye, I always imagine the person viewing upon the work I create. I want them to have an experience that is visually striking, but balanced with functionality and readibility. If someone understands my intent within seconds, then I believe I've hit the mark!I live and work in Scarborough, Ontario. I completed my undergraduate at Ryerson University and enjoy my time creating freelance art and passion game projects online.

Personal Character - 2022
Sketchy, loose style with pencil/watercolour brushes

This is my general illustration style for most of my work. It's a soft, half-cel shaded style with sketchy pencil and watercolour brushes. I love using unique colours to bring out the shading, and believe that simplicity and less tightly controlled brushwork creates a more inviting look.I work entirely in Procreate on my 12.4" iPad Pro.

Rough sketch!

Commission Work for @straviios - 2021
Client work for large scale illustration with cleaner line work

This is my illustration style for a cleaner, more precise shading and lighting work. I enjoy using gestures and implied shapes for backgrounds to bring out the subject of the work. I also greatly enjoy drawing animals and fantasy creatures, so this was a great fun project for me!When working with my clients, I always provide several sketch thumbnails to get a feel of what they're looking for before committing to one idea.I work entirely in Procreate on my 12.4" iPad Pro.

Concept sketches provided to the client.

Personal Work 2021
Character designs in a flat style with clothing designs

I also enjoy character design from time to time, and this is my general "human"-like style that I like approaching my characters with. This is the style that I am most used to, but I can also mimic styles of other artists and deconstruct their work to imitate.I work entirely in Procreate on my 12.4" iPad Pro.

Another illustration work with more lightning and atmospheric design

This is one of my favourite pieces from last year, with heavy emphasis on lighting and atmospheric design choices.I work entirely in Procreate on my 12.4" iPad Pro.

Emote Work in a cleaner style, with specific size considerations for Twitch.tv

In addition to regular illustrations, I also draw small form factor artworks in the form of emotes (similar to emojis, emoticons and stickers). Because of size considerations, this work has specific specifications and has to go through testing to ensure they resize well and that the intent of the emote is conveyed well even when small.I work entirely in Procreate on my 12.4" iPad Pro. However, for emotes, I may sometimes opt to draw them in Adobe Illustrator as vector drawings if the client requests that the artwork is also scalable for logo or promotional material.

Full set of emotes for the client. It's important to match the style and colours across every emote.

Prostate Cancer Calendar
A yearly calendar I help create with the Diva Riding Society of Canada to raise awareness

This calendar is a project very near and dear to me. I was approached by Danielle Stockley of the Diva Riding Society of Canada back in 2017 to assist with creating a new layout for the Prostate Cancer Calendar that they create every year to raise awareness and charity for the Prostate Cancer Society of Canada. I work closely with her and her photographers to ensure that every image is carefully retouched and that all dates are accurate. I have happily helped create their calendar every year thus far since 2017! It is a privilege to be able to help out with this great cause. This calendar was typeset and designed in Adobe Indesign, which graphics drawn and made in Adobe Illustrator.

Sweet Surrender 2019
Logo and Branding Design
Vancouver Gelato Shop

This project was for a client who wanted to create their own gelato shop in the Vancouver area. While my original ideas for the logo were more bold and focused more on the ice cream shapes, the client had a vision of an old-time style with a specific colour scheme in mind. I worked closely with the client to create the branding he envisioned, as well as the artwork for the sides of his ice cream/gelato carts. This logo was created in Adobe Illustrator as vector artwork.

Meridian Health Osteopathy
Logo Design and Drafts

Logo designs are not too common for me, but I have a lot of fun creating them. I enjoy the process of understanding the needs of the client and trying to encapsulate their business or project in a graphic. I always provide several options and narrow down their likes and dislikes of each one, while working towards revisions and hopefully reaching a final logo. These logos were created in Adobe Illustrator as vector artwork.

Parkview Hills Logo Design & Signage Design | Large Format Signage Work

A lot of my work is most similar to this—Mostly layout design and signage. Large signage considerations are interesting because you always think about how it would be viewed from a long distance, and what sort of crucial information would have to be most prominent. This signage layout was created in Adobe Indesign, while the logo and some elements were made in Adobe Illustrator.

Wine Bottle Box | Packaging Box Cut & Artwork Design

I am fairly green to packaging and box design, but I believe that packaging design is incredibly important. It is not only a visual experience but also a tactile one, where one has to manipulate the box or open something, and the design of that experience is a whole process. This client was very careful about the colour of the box to highlight the wine bottle product within. This design was created in Adobe Indesign, while some elements were made in Adobe Illustrator.

Alterico 2020
Fully Online Browser-Based Art Roleplay Game

Alterico is the spiritual successor to my 2018 project Crown of Septima. For this project, my partner and I have decided to fully move to a hosted website domain to build our future community of artists. In this community, you would be able to create a character and grow them by drawing art. The goal is to encourage young adult artists to grow into a consistent schedule of art, and to try new art styles based on the tasks provided in the game.I am currently still very actively developing this game with my team as system design lead and project manager, and I can't wait to get to a beta release for the 300+ subscribers in the mailing list interested in the game! This was the first project as well where I made an effort to have a larger social media presence as well as spread the word via Facebook and Instagram advertising, and I learned a lot from researching the data.Alterico was also the first project where I used my experience as a graphic designer to attempt learning more about UI/UX design, where I self-taught myself how to use Adobe XD and Figma to wireframe and design the website layout for my developer.

Crown Of Septima 2018
Art Drawing Game based in Discord chat program

Crown of Septima is my original project that inspired Alterico. The premise of the project was to create a small community of artists and encourage them to draw on a consistent basis through virtual currency rewards and status. Back in 2018, I really enjoyed the fun of drawing art together as a community and providing resources for all artists to grow and learn. I wrote most of the systems in place and the lore for the world of Septima, which includes taking player feedback and understanding what sort of pain points players were experiencing that kept them from enjoying the game.In the end, the administrative upkeep for this project was too much for me and my partner and we had to close down the game after half a year.
